The SALSA CYCLES COLOSSAL is made of Cromo 4130. The bike is globally designed to be used to ride on silk road and also pavements...to get the idea, think about Paris-Roubais ! The tire clearance is too generous to be a pure racing bike and too small to be a gravel, we are talking of 30cc without fenders and 28cc with. The COLOSSAL is in between a racing bike and a gravel - relaxing bike, it is not hard and fast, but neither compliant and versatile. It can be your all-day / all weather bike, it keeps an aggressive and handling geometry without being a racer. A speedy-reactive touring bike for sure.
The equipment is also orientated for speed-touring. The SALSA CYCLES COLOSSAL is mostly equipped with the SRAM APEX group-set : double 50/34, on the rear cassette is a SRAM1030 in 11/28, (the apex cassette is 11/32). If you climb mountain you ll also have to go down a day...and to brake, the COLOSSAL is equipped with mechanical (SRAM) Avid BB7 disc brakes, and 140mm rotors.
The carbon front fork (Salsa Colossal Carbon) is tapered and accept 15x100 front axle - while the rear axle of the bike is "only" 10x135mm Quick Release (only the 2015 Colossal TI was in 12x142mm).
You ll not be able to set-up rack or even mid rack, you ll only be able to set-up fender (mounts are hidden on the inside part of the frame). So if you wish to carry more-stuff, you ll have to use a rack - on seat-post or bags fixed in the front triangle. Keep in mind this is a speedy touring bike for light adventure as it is rack-less.
